What the IPL did for cricket RASSPL will do for fishing.
RASSPL Aim.
The competition will give equal opportunity for all anglers to win prizes as the prizes are awarded for the biggest of each species therefore making it possible for anglers of all skills level the chance of claiming a prize.
The introduction of the RASSPL competitions will help kick start various struggling economies including B&Bs Hotels holiday resorts restaurants tackle shops and any industries involved in the fishing industry around the country that are battling to stay in business and the introduction of cash and big prize competitions will drive anglers to go fishing again and create sales desperately needed for the struggling markets.
The competitions will educate the public about the importance of catch and release angling in South Africa and reward anglers so they don’t have to sell fish to raise money to support there sport.
Sport fishing in America generates more income for America than cattle farming and citrus farming combined.
Recreational fishing in South Africa generates more direct income to South Africa than rugby and cricket an estimated 15 Billion a year according to a study done by the University of Stellenbosch in 2007 and should be close to 18 Billion by 2013.
To create a competition that is open to all anglers from around the country without having to join a club or association to be able to fish. The competitions are 100% catch and release and help promote sustainable fishing along our shores.

We will also have official members tagging fish at the competitions and research institutes taking samples as well as fitting certain species with tracking transmitters. With 56 competitions in a year and hundreds of anglers at each competition releasing fish it will become one of the biggest fish research platforms in the country. The Rock and Surf Super Pro League’s will be the first South African competitive catch and release sport fishing series where anglers from all over the country can take part in competitions and win big sponsored prizes and cash fishing along the South African coastline. The top 28 anglers from each province, based purely on a fish bonus point system will be chosen to represent their franchise. These anglers will then fish in a national tournament against each other at a set chosen coastal venue. Border Blacktips will be hosting a unique competition this coming weekend in the form of a Kaysers Beach Rock n Surf Challenge with tons of prizes on offer to the anglers. Some awesome cash prizes and fantastic tackle and holidays is on offer as well, something i am really sure you cant miss out on. Get there early to avoid any disappointment as entries to this competition are going to be flying off the shelves!! We have finally got the results from the EL nationals published in an international scientific journal, please take the time out to read what impact RASSPL has had this far. With the new season fast approaching and things looking positively already, we’ve decided to give back to our members. Not only does the online form create a smaller carbon footprint but its also a whole lot less of a hassle to deal with than printing, signing, scanning, mailing. This form takes 2mins max to complete which leaves you with much more free time to prep some traces etc. the amount of time that the fish is exposed to air (obviously we recognize that some species are more difficult to handle than others) Anglers are welcome to upload as many entries of any species of fish that they capture. Southern Cape Great Whites have finally released there prizelist for the upcoming RASSPL Africa Nationals. Both Penn and Shimano has thrown their very best at us to continue doing what we do best, FISHING. So a huge shout out goes to both Penn and Shimano in encouraging us to keep working alongside Rhodes University in achieving what’s best for our beloved sport. Together we have achieved a R150 000 worth of the latest prizes to anglers who wish to compete in the national event with everything from Penn Clash, Saragosa’s, Battalions etc will all be on offer. Wade and his boys have decided to throw a massive R25000 worth of prizes together to ensure everyone shares in the spoils at the end of the day!
